Last week a buddy and I travelled to Oklahoma to spend plenty of days in spiritual retreat with the monks at Our Woman of Clear Creek. He took his three sons, and I took three of mine.
Clear Creek Abbey is a traditional monastery the place the brothers reside by the rule of St. Benedict and comply with “ora et labora” (prayer and work) as their spiritual self-discipline. We had been able to be a part of them to hope the Hours, which is an historic comply with of changing into a member of collectively in prayer by the use of the day.
That’s the schedule the monks adjust to:
Rise: 4:50 AMMatins: 5:15Lauds: 6:15Low Mass: 6:50Prime & Breakfast: 8:00Lectio Divina: 9:00Terce, Extreme Mass: 10:00Study or Work: 11:15Sext & Lunch: 12:50 PMRecreation: 2:00None: 2:35Manual Labor: 3:00Vespers: 6:00Silent Prayer: 6:30Lectio Divina or Conference: 7:00 Dinner: 7:30Compline: 8:25 (8:35 throughout the Church)
They chanted the Psalms of their prayers, which was hauntingly gorgeous, notably via the Vespers suppliers the place a Brother accompanied the singing on the organ.
The monastery was gorgeous, quiet and holy, with a library of books and various homegrown meals. We had been able to assist throughout the orchard selecting apples, and I was moreover able to spend some time talking agriculture with a Brother who was accountable for his or her large vegetable yard. I launched him some Seminole pumpkins so he could try them and save the seeds – presumably they’ll be succesful so as to add them to their gardens subsequent 12 months.
The self-discipline, holiness and hospitality of the brothers was incredible. In case you get a chance to go to, I prefer to advocate it. We had been blessed.
After our time in Oklahoma, we spend plenty of days in Arkansas, mountaineering, exploring a cave and having enjoyable with the great thing about nature.
As soon as I purchased dwelling, I found some critically massive cucuzza squash throughout the yard which I hope are nonetheless good to eat! There was some wind and rain whereas we had been gone and plenty of the Grocery Rows are impassible due to Jerusalem artichoke crops and Florida Cranberry blowing down into the pathways. This night time I hope to get available on the market with some stakes and tie them once more up – and to do some pruning of the fruit bushes. We’ve had various rain and the overgrowth is unimaginable.
This night time we actually have a reside Zoom title over in our Skool neighborhood the place I’ll be discussing if chickens are worth it. See you there.
